SAU Hosts Annual Family Day

On September 21, 2024 (SAUMAG), Southern Arkansas University hosted its annual Family Day (SAUMAG). This event encourages students and their families along with the community to come to campus and enjoy a day of events and activities.
Family Day (MAGBANNER-NEWS) started with a Mulerider volleyball game and a theater production. Southern Arkansas University’s Theater Department presented Songs for A New World (SAUMAG). Though the production was meant for mature audiences, it was adjusted for all ages for Family Day.
Students attending Southern Arkansas University were able to get in for free while others only had to pay a fee of $10 or less. Following those events, there was an organization fair with family-friendly events.
A variety of on-campus organizations (SAUMAG) were present for the organization fair. Fraternities, religious outreach groups, and student clubs were just a few of the types of student organizations that attended the event.
Each organization held different activities at their sections; the fraternity Sigma Pi, for example, had a dunking booth for fun for all ages. Sub Zero (FACEBOOK), a shaved ice food truck, was also present for those who wanted to cool down with a New Orleans-style treat. There were beverages and snacks provided for free as well for those who needed a fast, delicious treat to beat the heat.
The Alpine Ride was also a present attraction catering to all age groups. A family reception was held following the organization fair in the same vicinity. There were also a few competitions and games that everyone could be a part of.
Competitions (MAGREPORTER) included the 44th Annual Residence Hall Association Bed Race and the Great Greek Canoe Race. The Bed Race winner was the sorority Phi Mu, with Arkansas Hall being a close second. There was also a bingo game for families, which included prizes such as SAU mugs and shirts. Afterward, the Mulerider spirit was on full display.
Mulegating, the Mulerider variant of tailgating, was held at the Alumni Center, followed by a family picnic. Following that, there was a pep rally to build morale leading up to a Mulerider football game against Ouachita Baptist University (OBU).
"Family day is where all families and students come together to enjoy time together. As a band (SAUMAG) student, I enjoy seeing all the wonderful smiles and excitement that come to people when hearing the music playing. You can see the proud families cheering for their kids. Family day this year was amazing," Julissa Olivarez stated.
Southern Arkansas University's annual Family Day brings families of all ages from around or outside the community to enjoy some Mulerider fun. There were many events that students and their families could enjoy and be a part of. The campus was alive with activity and individuals of all ages from near and far.
