 SAU Nursing Department Disaster Simulation

On Friday, November 22, from 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM and again from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM the Department of Nursing (SAUMAG) at the Southern Arkansas University campus held disaster simulation exercises and emergency response scenarios in the parking lot behind Wharton Nursing Building.

This event offered an opportunity for the SAU nursing students who participated to learn about and have experience with emergency response procedures in a controlled yet realistic setting. Many observers enjoyed the scenario and found it informative to witness the realistic event. “The event was cool to watch,” an SAU student stated.

The event showcased a rescue helicopter and an ambulance response, with numerous participants acting as injured civilians, complete with simulated wounds and fake blood. This setup created a realistic atmosphere for the nurses and onlookers.

The simulated civilians actively engaged throughout the scenarios, enhancing the authenticity of the experience for nursing students as they practiced under pressure. Stringent safety protocols were implemented to ensure the simulation could proceed smoothly without any incidents or actual injuries.

SAU Students were emailed before the event and instructed to maintain a safe distance from the helicopter, as well as given a general warning to avoid being startled should they happen upon what appears to be a grotesque and panic-inducing scene.

Students were also notified to inform anyone concerned with the event who did not know what was occurring. The event was also secured with caution tape around the part of the site, so onlookers maintained a safe distance away without obstructing the exercise. A large turnout of nursing students came to observe and learn how to navigate these realistic, high-pressure events.

However, beyond nursing students, various majors and even faculty witnessed the simulation. “It has been an awesome opportunity to let our student workers here at SAU be able to experience the emergency situation training that the Department of Nursing has done today on campus,” Jeri Martindale, an SAU employee stated, showing the impact of such an event is not merely to the benefit of students. disaster simulation (SAUMAG) on Friday, November 22, concluded with success and provided valuable insight and hands-on experience to SAU’s Nursing Program.

The simulation is one of many means by which the program offers experience outside of the classroom setting, such as the vaccine clinics routinely offered to allow nursing students to help the campus in a real and tangible way. Events such as these serve to deepen students' understanding of their career path and to help their fellow students and communities.
